BI Clarity — Power BI Governance Audit
BI Clarity — The Power BI Governance Audit
A data-driven assessment of your entire Power BI landscape. Automated deep analysis at the model, report, and workspace level — delivering clear, actionable recommendations instead of guesswork.
Who is BI Clarity for?
BI Clarity is designed for organizations that rely on Power BI in production and whose reporting landscape has grown organically — often faster than the governance around it.
IT Leadership & BI Teams
You need transparency across workspace structures, permissions, and data sources — without weeks of manual inventory work.
CFOs & Controlling
You want to know which reports are actually used, where duplicates are driving license costs, and where data quality risks are hiding.
Organizational Development
You’re leading transformation projects and need a reliable as-is analysis of the analytical infrastructure as a foundation for decision-making.
The Methodology — Four Phases to an Auditable BI Inventory
BI Clarity follows a structured approach that combines technical deep analysis with organizational context. Every phase produces verifiable artifacts — no black box.
01 — Landscape Scan
Automated retrieval of the entire Power BI landscape via the REST API: workspaces, permissions, data models, data sources, refresh schedules, and refresh status. The result is a complete inventory of all tenant objects — with zero manual effort and no access to report content required.
02 — Deep Extraction
Technical deep analysis at the file level: every PBIX container is automatically unpacked and examined for model structure, DAX measures, relationships, data sources, and report layouts. Encrypted or protected files are detected and safely skipped. Result: a machine-readable inventory of every single report.
03 — Governance Scoring
Each report is evaluated against weighted criteria: orphaned measures, missing relationships, empty visualizations, duplicates, and data source connectivity. The result is a score per report with a clear recommendation — Keep, Review, or Archive — with a fully transparent rationale.
04 — Report & Roadmap
All findings are delivered in three formats: an Excel audit report for leadership, structured JSON for technical downstream processing, and a Markdown export with Mermaid diagrams for documentation. Based on the results, we collaboratively develop a prioritized governance roadmap.
Use Cases — When to Deploy BI Clarity
Taming BI Sprawl
Over the years, dozens to hundreds of reports have accumulated. Nobody knows which ones are still used, which are duplicates, and where outdated data sources are connected. BI Clarity creates in days the overview that would take weeks manually.
Preparing for Migration
Before moving to Microsoft Fabric, a new data platform, or consolidating workspaces, you need a reliable inventory. BI Clarity delivers the as-is analysis as a migration foundation — including a dependency graph and scoring.
Optimizing License Costs
Unused reports in Premium workspaces, redundant data models, reports without visuals — all of this costs money. Governance Scoring identifies archive candidates and quantifies savings potential.
Compliance & Audit
Who has access to which workspaces? Which data sources are connected? Are there uncontrolled data flows? BI Clarity produces an auditable inventory that withstands compliance requirements — automatically and repeatably.
Handover & Onboarding
A BI lead leaves the company or a new team takes over. BI Clarity documents the entire landscape in machine-readable form and generates LLM-optimized exports that radically accelerate knowledge transfer.
Setting a Quality Baseline
You want to enforce standards — for example: every report needs relationships, no orphaned measures, SQL-based sources. BI Clarity delivers the first measurement and can be used as a recurring quality check.
What You Receive
Every BI Clarity audit delivers four aligned artifacts — for different audiences and downstream needs.
| Artifact | Description |
|---|---|
| Audit Report (Excel) | Pivot-ready overview with workspace summary, user roles, report inventory, data models, data sources, and governance scoring. |
| Technical Inventory (JSON) | Machine-readable complete inventory of all extracted metadata. Foundation for diffing between audit snapshots and integrations. |
| LLM Export (Markdown) | Token-optimized documentation with Mermaid diagrams and atomic snippets per measure and Power Query. Directly usable as context for GPT, Claude, or RAG workflows. |
| Governance Roadmap | Prioritized recommendations: quick wins, mid-term consolidation, and strategic governance measures. |
Typical Engagement
A BI Clarity audit typically takes 3–5 working days. The initial consultation is free.
